What FIRST Is All About
FIRST is an acronym that stands for: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The non-profit organization was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen and inventor and entrepreneur. Since then FIRST has boomed in popularity and more and more teams join the program every year.
FIRST's purpose is simple: To inspire young kids to seek careers and education in Science and Technology by engaging them with fun sport like competitions. FIRST also brings kids together with mentors to teach them about engineering and technology and to teach them life-long skills such as team work, communication and leadership.
FIRST runs a number of programs for all age groups
- Junior FLL (FIRST Lego League) for grades K through 3.
- FLL for grades 4 through 8.
